A Nashville man faces multiple charges, including animal cruelty and assault, after allegedly attacking a dog with a knife on Christmas Eve.
Metro Nashville Police responded to a call at 18 East Thompson Lane around 8:30 p.m., following reports of a man threatening others with a weapon. Upon arrival, officers encountered Patrick Martin, who claimed he had been in a confrontation with an individual whose dog had charged him, according to the arrest report.
However, witnesses provided a different account. They alleged Martin aggressively approached them, yelling and behaving erratically. The victims stated their dog stood in front of them, barking to protect them. Martin then reportedly swung his knife at the dog, cutting its face.
After injuring the animal, Martin allegedly continued to threaten the victims, waving the knife while they contacted 911.
When officers attempted to arrest Martin, he reportedly resisted, kicking one officer in the head during the scuffle. As he was placed in the patrol vehicle, Martin allegedly tried to grab an officer’s neck and actively pushed them away.
A subsequent search revealed Martin was in possession of marijuana and methamphetamine, police reported.
The injured dog’s condition and any medical treatment were not immediately disclosed. Martin now faces charges of animal cruelty, assault on law enforcement, and drug possession.
This incident highlights ongoing concerns about public safety and animal cruelty during heightened holiday activities.
